Abstract: The prevalence of malnutrition in patients with gastrointestinal cancer is high and more after surgery. The objective is to study the characteristics of patients with gastrointestinal cancer after major surgery in relation to their nutritional status, at the Manacor Hospital. Methods. A descriptive study of patients admitted to surgery is carried out. The Nutrition Risk Screening-2002 (NRS-2002), the Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and the SENPE-SEDOM consensus are collected. In addition, etiological and phenotypic criteria. A descriptive analysis was performed and two groups of patients with non-severe vs severe malnutrition are compared. The degree of agreement with "Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition"(GLIM) was analyzed, with the limitation of not collecting muscle mass. Results, 55 patients are evaluated, 67% men and average age 68.8±11.2 years. 72.7% had Colorectal Neoplasms, and 37.5% with ileostomy. 58.2% presented moderate malnutrition and 25.5% severe, according to SENPE-SEDOM. And, 83.6% had malnutrition C, with SGA. The mean BMI 26±4.3 kg/m2, percentage weight loss 9.4±7.8%, albumin 2.7±0.5 g/dl and C-Reactive Protein (CRP) 12.7±7,5 mg/dl. Among the non-severe and severe malnutrition groups there were significant differences in BMI, albumin and percentage weight loss. The degree of concordance with GLIM is slight. Conclusions. Patients are malnourished at the time of the intervention and CRP its very high. It is proposed to improve the protocol of action to prevent and diagnose malnutrition. The degree of concordance with GLIM is slight, more research is needed.
