Abstract: | Introduction. Inhibitory learning refers to our ability to transform proactive inhibitory behaviour into automatic inhibitory behaviour. There is a lack of studies investigating cortical excitability associated with such type of inhibitory learning. Consequently, the main objective of this research will be the establishment of cortical excitability associated with inhibitory learning, using a probabilistic version of the Go / No-Go task. By forming inhibitory and non-inhibitory associations with six different stimuli, the task will permit us to compare corticospinal excitability in healthy subjects in the initial versus late stages of inhibitory learning. During the task, we will use transcranial magnetic stimulation to administer single pulses over the primary motor cortex and will record the elicited motor evoked potentials (MEPs). In addition to the neurophysiological measure, reaction times to the stimuli and the proportion of correct and incorrect responses will be recorded. Results. We expect to find a decrease in corticospinal excitability in the late versus initial phases of the Go / No-Go task, reflecting the presence of inhibitory learning. Specifically, we expect to see a decrease in the amplitude of MEPs, a reduction in reaction times, and an increase in the proportion of correct responses in the late versus initial phases of the Go / No-Go task. Lastly, as a result of the formation of habits, we expect to observe an increase in the number of committed mistakes within the slips of action phase. |
