Abstract: The main objective of the study was to analyze the executive functions in a large sample of males and females with eating disorders (ED). Specifically, it aimed to assess and compare decision-making, set-shifting, and inhibitory control among male and female patients with different ED diagnostic types. Methods, to study these executive functions, a neuropsychological battery consisting of the Iowa Gambling Task, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test and the Stroop Color and Word Test was administered to a total sample of 177 patients with ED, comprising 40 males and 137 females. In addition, all patients were assessed by means of the Eating Disorder Inventory-2 and the Symptom Checklist-90 Revised to assess eating and general psychopathology. Results, the results obtained were not able to show statistically significant differences associated with gender in any of the tasks of the executive functions studied. In conclusion, our findings revealed that males and females with ED have similar deficits in decision-making, set-shifting, and inhibitory control which, in turn, suggests that patients of both genders may benefit from similar treatment programs aimed at improving these executive functions.
