Title: La ciudad desde el tejado. Rehabilitar las cubiertas de Ciutat Vella como espacios vivos
Author: Campomar Goroskieta, Marina
Tutor: Fontana, Maria Pia
Abstract: At a time of continuous growth and massification of urban spaces in large cities, the roofs as a built element are a new open-air space from which to make a city on the built city through a transdisciplinary management that wanders between planning and spontaneity. Today's roof architecture continues to look to the past as an example to be followed and developed in the cities of the future. Throughout history, roofs as significant as those of vernacular architecture, modern architecture and garden roofs, among others, continue to be the object of analysis and revision as they continue to provide new conceptions of the complexity of the roof as an element of cities. Having recovered the historical contributions on the relevance of roofs and researched ways of intervening in recent decades, the work addresses the relationship between the habitability of the roof and the urban fabric, as well as the links established between the space and its uses through the actions of the users. After a dissection of the relationships, morphology and uses and functions of this space, the work begins a path towards a study methodology, analytical and design, to recover the roofs as living spaces: more naturalized collective spaces. The tool for compiling information, communication, participation and dissemination is a collaborative interactive map at the service of the public. Next, the research is focused on the city of Barcelona and specifically on Ciutat Vella. From the case study, the aim is to understand the process of shaping the city from an aerial perspective focused on the roofs. Once the historical, urban, social and cultural context of the roofs has been established, the work ends by applying the proposed study methodology to the urban residential fabric of Ciutat Vella.
