Abstract: This study is presented as an approach to the phenomenon of Free Software from its political side. Far from being an alternative technology whose nature would be explainable in exclusively technical terms - which would not but attribute to it a presumed technological neutrality -, here we assume that all technology is in line with a process of social construction in which social, economic, political and/or moral factors have a bearing on and go beyond that which is merely technical. In this way, the semantics of the political will be examined in its different acceptations through two complementary levels. On the one hand, tracing the cultural foundations that underlie Free Software and the possible concomitances of political content. On the other, describing the current praxis of heterogeneous actors (corporations, governments, user associations') developed in a global framework of collective interaction, which is marked equally, as a result of the strategic confrontation of interpretations and individual discourses on the same, of an unquestionably political nature.
