Abstract: This paper seeks to analyze the needs of a Smart City in the framework of the sustainable development, putting special emphasis on the data that are continuously collected in a Smart City and the analysis technologies (AI, Big Data) to exploit them. Based on a review of the characteristics and sectors of a Smart City, among which the telecommunication infrastructure network on which to build solutions clearly stands out, and on a review of the conditions of sustainability in a city, with clear support on the Sustainable Development Goals defined by the United Nations, we seek to present a common framework for sustainable smart cities. All of this highlights the need to take advantage of ICTs in cities to achieve sustainability. Furthermore, the emphasis on data analysis technologies and the information that is exchanged every day in a city (urban data) leads to highlight the importance of these technologies for potential solutions in a sustainable smart city.
