Abstract: Achieving gender equality is one of the most important issues of this century. This paper focuses on analysing one of its main discussions: the debate on the political subjects of feminism. What is the category "woman"? Should a definition be established? And if so, what is the appropriate definition? On the contrary, is it more effective to abolish the category "gender" and binarism? The paper makes a theoretical review of the main authors who have spoken about these issues: Simone de Beauvoir (1949), Angela Davis (1981), Yuderkis Espinosa (2014), Adrienne Rich (1980), Nuria Varela (2005), Monique Wittig (1992), Pol Beatriz Preciado (2020) and Judith Butler (1990). Moreover, two gender experts -Montserrat Sagot and Marina Subirats-, are interviewed, in order to contrast their ideas with those of the bibliographic production. Three main results and conclusions have been found. First, when defining "woman" it is necessary to differentiate between the definition valid at the time when gender equality has been achieved and genders have no hierarchical weight, and the definition valid at the present. As for the desirable scenario when gender equality has been achieved, we still do not know if genders will have been abolished and women will be defined as "people with vulva-shaped genitals" or if there will be a multiplicity of genders, without hierarchies and, therefore, the exact definition will not exist, as "there will be as many genders as people". As for the current moment, there are two different definitions depending on the utopia we imagine: "people with vulva-shaped genitals", or "people who identify themselves as women and suffer gender oppression". It is important currently to combine both definitions and not to superimpose one on the other, as we do not yet know what the utopia of gender equality will look like. Second, it has been found that the definition makes sense when it helps to recognize fellow fighters, but it should not be used to marginalize or exclude people. The definition is useful when it unites people oppressed by the patriarchy. Finally, it is important to pinpoint that even more relevant than finding a definition is to reflect on what actions need to be taken to achieve equality. This is an analysis that is intended to be carried out in future research.
