Abstract: Myasthenia gravis is a neuromuscular, autoimmune and chronic disease, which manifests itself with fatigue and muscle weakness to varying degrees in the voluntary skeletal muscles, these increase with activity and decrease with rest. Symptomatology varies depending on which muscles are being affected; in the most severe cases, it can be a major inability to perform many simple daily activities causing vital compromise, although small percentage of patients experience it. Early diagnosis leads to an increase in quality of life, however because it's a rare disease it's often difficult to diagnose. The standard treatment is with anticholinesterases and corticosteroids but these cause many side effects and for this reason we want to emphasize the importance of carrying out a nutritional assessment and educate patients on how this can help. A complete nutritional assessment will determine which eating habits will support the patient's needs and can prevent some complications of some of the typical symptoms such as dysphagia and loss of muscle mass. In order to implement a nutritional intervention as part of the treatment for patients suffering from myasthenia, it's important that we raise awareness of the benefits and the improved quality of life that occur as a result.
