Abstract: | The information and knowledge society of this century expects students to successfully manage an excess of information, but this does not mean that they have the necessary skills to deal with information problem-solving (IPS). This study expands on available academic knowledge regarding students'IPS process development by exploring in depth the relationship between certain individual characteristics and the information scanning and processing skills exhibited by students when engaging in a scientific inquiry exercise in a web-based learning environment. The data collected from a total of 82 secondary school students suggest that the teaching approach used to improve the IPS skills included in the science curriculum was successful, as all students' learning improved in terms of both their scientific knowledge of illnesses and health and their IPS skills. The findings also show that there are not many significant correlations between students' individual skills and their success when employing information scanning and processing skills, but they do highlight several significant correlations between the two information skills. The results obtained could help teachers to plan, implement, and evaluate IPS teaching in schools. |
