Abstract: Cancer has been one of the world's leading causes of morbidity and mortality for years. Although its pathology is complex, it is known that it can be largely related to epigenetic alterations, such as methylation at position five of the cytosine. In this aspect, the study of changes in the patterns of DNA methylation could allow the identification of differentially methylated regions that can act as diagnostic biomarkers in the early stages of the development of this disease. The main objective of this work is to detect biomarkers that are specific to the gender or age of patients, due to is has been proven that methylation patterns can vary according to gender and age. In order to carry out this project, methylation data from Illumina Human Methylation 450K arrays were downloaded from four types of cancer available in The Cancer Genome Atlas: colon (COAD), liver (LIHC), lung (LUAD) and pancreas (PAAD). Statistical analyses were made using the R environment with the Rstudio software and these allowed the identification of differential methylation between the tumour tissue vs normal cohorts depending on the patient's gender for all types of cancer, as well as age for colon and liver cancer. In addition, it was proved (except for pancreatic cancer) that there were genes that appear only when the interaction of tumoral vs normal tissue was studied with the two covariates.
