Abstract: This research analyzes the programming of the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival, the most important and oldest festival specialized in genre cinema on the international festivals circuit, in the period between 2014 and 2019. Its Programming Committee deploys a series of programming strategies and policies that define and promote, annually, much of the latest trends in the fantastic genre and its related currents. Trends are reaffirmed by key actors such as criticism and audience. Programmers, however, confront difficult challenges. The entry of some powerful actors, the streaming platforms, and the strategies of the majors, present a difficult fit with the program of the Festival. The programming of the schedule is also shaped by the decisions of sales agents, very influential actors in the audiovisual sector nowadays. The Sitges Festival remains the key showcase for fantastic film, despite the industrial and sectoral challenges that arise.
