Abstract: In this essay we will focus on the topic of silence in Jaume Plensa's work. The essay is entitled Communicative silence and the communication of silence in Jaume Plensa's work, as it is necessary to emphasize the paradoxical nature of the silence which Plensa seems to convey. Certain pieces of his work found in urban environments, such as the heads of girls and young women in meditative postures, attract our attention in such a way that we could even be talking of visual noise. However, these sculptures have the sole intention of inviting us to share silence. We will study Plensa¿s silence in depth, taking into account what the artist himself has said about it. We will also contrast his ideas with the ones of connoisseurs of his art work. We must mention, however, that Plensa's silence is connected to words. Therefore, we must also relate it to communication and literature, as the artist not only writes poems but he also makes use of literary references. In fact, it would not be a mistake to define Plensa's work as visual poetry.
