Abstract: This paper presents a description of the semantics of the prepositions 'to' and 'in' based on three fundamental theoretical contributions of Cognitive Linguistics (CL): conceptual metaphor, image schemas and prototype theory. The spatial, temporal and notional uses of these prepositions can be explained in a motivated way and from a meaning-based perspective. Moreover, unlike other languages such as Spanish, in Catalan there is a confluence of uses between 'a' and 'en', which allows us to establish a continuum of values between the two prepositions. LC is a discipline based on the use of language, therefore, by studying the occurrences of the prepositions 'a' and 'en' in a corpus, we check whether the prototypical distribution of uses according to the localist theory coincides with the data obtained. The analysis of these results makes it possible to describe the usages located in the continuum between the two prepositions.
