Title: Anàlisi economicofinancera de l'International Airlines Group (IAG): En quina situació afronta l'escenari post-2020?
Author: Sáez Estupiñá, Marc
Tutor: Romera Cruz, Victor
Abstract: This project seeks to analyze to what extent the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the IAG company, through a study of the economic and financial situation of IAG at the end of the financial years 2016 to 2020, and also including the first data for 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic and especially the restrictions that governments around the world have placed on the mobility of their inhabitants has meant a very significant reduction in passenger demand in the commercial aviation sector, and which has been strongly reflected in IAG's results, with very negative losses, after years of significant profits. The project will also compare IAG's situation in the five years under study with its main competitors in the European market, which, as will be seen throughout the work, have also been strongly affected, in some aspects in a similar way to IAG, and in others in a more or less positive way, giving rise to varied competitive situations among the different groups of airlines. The paper includes a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats and opportunities) matrix of IAG as an analysis tool to help to see the current situation of the company, complemented by a CAME analysis, which indicates the author's recommendations to correct the weaknesses, face the threats, maintain the strengths and exploit the opportunities, in order to face the post-Covid scenario in the best possible way. Finally, the author indicates the conclusions reached during the development of this project, among which is the concern for the financial and economic situation of IAG, due to the effects of the pandemic, with liquidity and debt ratios far from optimal values and a very reduced net worth due to losses. There are also some positive aspects, such as the profitability obtained by IAG in years prior to Covid-19 and the actions taken during 2020 and 2021 to increase cash and cash equivalents, placing them well above their level in 2019 and previous years. As a final conclusion, the pandemic has hit IAG and its competitors very hard, but the position with which IAG had reached this situation and the actions it has taken to ensure its future viability, makes it possible to be optimistic about the future of the company and its ability to remain one of the main players in European and global aviation.
