Title: El nacimiento de una madre: cambios estructurales y funcionales en el cerebro humano materno
Author: Vaziri de la Fuente, Maryam
Tutor: Bartrés-Faz, David
Abstract: Complex and numerous adaptations take place in the female brain during pregnancy and the postpartum period. These cerebral changes allow the development of care and protection behaviours for the survival of the offspring. Until recently, the majority of research on maternal neuroplasticity was based on animal studies. However, a limited number of recent neuroimaging studies on human mothers reveal that maternity causes dramatic and dynamic structural and functional changes in the brain. These transformations have been associated with the transition of women towards motherhood. This work reviews the changes in human brain structure and function during pregnancy and postpartum, as well as the relationship of these alterations with maternal behaviour.
