Abstract: | Photographic examinations are one of the most frequently used police investigative procedures, but at the same time, they are one of the most controversial in terms of assessing the validity of their results. Despite the dangers of a false positive (erroneous recognition of the perpetrator of a crime), photographic examinations cannot be ruled out in criminal investigations, since often the only thing available to initiate an investigation is the testimony of the victim (and this includes the recognition of the perpetrator that the victim may carry out). Science, and specifically the psychology of testimony, has very strong evidence regarding the factors that can influence the outcome of the investigation, and that can affect the amount of suggestion that is made on the witness, as well as techniques that can reduce false positives. Designing a police protocol that allows to combine scientific knowledge with the legal requirements of the courts, in order to improve the conduct of photographic examinations by police investigators, has been the objective of the TFG. |
