Author: Ferrer Policarpo, Marc

Abstract: The 4th century BC in Greece it is a period of transition and deep change, marked by the development of the conflict (stasis) and the general situation of crisis, experienced by the Greek city-states. Until then, the soldier-citizens or hoplites had the leading role in the classical warfare, constituting as the archetypal and singular militar unity in the koine framework. Nevertheless, at the end of the 5th century BC, an entity that had been marginalized in the Hellas warfare, began to break in: the Greek mercenaries and the war professionals. Beyond the conventional idea of the fortune soldier that acquires the mercenary in the current context, in the ancient world this figure takes on a complex social, political and economic dimension which transgresses the current conventional image. Thus, the aim of this work is to analyze the phenomenon of Greek mercenaries and the professionalization process raised within the Hella's military paradigm from the fourth century BC.
