Title: La mujer y el matrimonio en la Atenas clásica
Author: Salmerón Pelado, María
Tutor: Oller Guzmán, Marta
Abstract: From the second feminist wave in the seventies of the twentieth century, with the emergence of gender studies and interest in social history, a new stage in contemporary historiography begins, resulting in a notable increase in the research on women in the ancient world and introducing new perspectives to historical analysis. The objective of this Master's Thesis is to analyse the role of Athenian women in classical times (5th-4th centuries B.C.E.) from the point of view of the family, carrying out an analysis from marriage to the birth of children. One of the main roles of women was the perpetuation of offspring through legitimate children, so we will be able to observe an evolution in her condition as a woman in society through the exercise of her motherhood. In this way, she will highlight her importance both in the domestic unit and in society, developing essential activities for the survival of the Greek polis. To carry out this analysis, we have had both primary and secondary sources related to our case study, as well as some epigraphic texts, archaeological data and ceramic iconography.
