Abstract: The anthropogenic use of fire became generalized in Europe from 400 ka. onwards, during the Middle Pleistocene. Fire was a key element of the technological and cultural revolution that was taking place along this period. The use and control of fire was a parallel process to that involving an increasement of human cognitive abilities and a more complex social behavior. This project’s hypothesis is that hearths became the centric structural unit in Human assemblages during the Upper Pleistocene. Hearths would have determined the spatial distribution of sites and conditioned important factors such as intra-groups size, their social interactions, their specialized activities and the material remains. This investigation’s main goal is to better understand the role of hearths as a distributive element during the Upper Pleistocene.
