Abstract: The objective of this Master Thesis is to analyze, both from a technical and economic point of view, the feasibility of deploying the 50G-PON standard using the current optical infrastructure. From a technical point of view, chiefly, the main characteristics and architectures of the legacy GPON and XG-PON standards, as well as the new generation 50G-PON standard, are analyzed. Once known, the compatibility between them is also analyzed, in order to propose coexistence scenarios between the different standards and propose a smooth migration towards the most innovative technologies. In the economic section, the costs derived from adapting the current optical network to support the new standard are evaluated form a theoretical point of view, analyzing a case with the most flexible solution to allow the coexistence of legacy standards together with 50G-PON. In addition, we compare this proposal with the equivalent one without reusing the current infrastructure, in order to validate that the reuse of the already deployed optical infrastructure allows significant savings in the provision of new services compared to a new deployment that starts from scratch.
