Title: Els nous catalanoparlants de Mallorca: entre la il·lusió i la realitat
Author: Gallardo Esgleas, Miquel
Tutor: Puigdevall-Serralvo, Maite
Abstract: This work aims to fill a gap: the study of the new Catalan speakers of Mallorca, only analysed by Llobet (2022) with a work focused on the new Catalan speakers of Inca, in which he analyses in a very complete way the positioning they have with respect to ethno-linguistic and ethno-social identities, using the concepts of linguistic moulting and the legitimisation of the speakers. The idiosyncrasy of Mallorcan society makes an island-wide study necessary, given that there are numerous differences with Catalan and Valencian societies with which we share a language, but with which we have different political and social realities. Island society has not undergone a process of strong industrialisation like Catalonia, nor has there been a powerful bourgeoisie with a majority interest in preserving the language and culture. On the other hand, in just a few years it has gone from a rural society, with a strong presence of caciques, to a society of services oriented towards tourism, with the consequent arrival of a large number of people from other countries and cultures. All these social characteristics make it necessary to understand how new Catalan speakers emerge in this specific sociolinguistic environment, what motivations they have for learning Catalan and using it with the local population, and what the incorporation of this language into their linguistic repertoire has meant for them.
