Title: Dietas vegetarianas y veganas y su relación con el estado nutricional y de salud de mujeres adolescentes
Author: Botella Agulló, Teresa
Tutor: Serra Maqueda, Aida
Abstract: Background: Plant-based diets (vegetarian and vegan) are becoming more and more popular in Western countries. In recent years, the number of adolescent women who adopt them as a dietary pattern has increased. At an international level, nutrition and dietetics referents endorse them for this population group if they are supervised and accompanied by a professional. Objective/aim: To describe the effects of plant-based diets on the nutritional and health status of adolescent women. Materials and methods: Systematic review based on the PRISMA guideline of scientific studies on the influence of vegetarian diets on the health and nutritional status of adolescent women. Results: 8 studies were included. The results indicate that there are no nutritional risks in vegetarian and vegan adolescents compared to omnivores. These diets can meet the nutritional requirements of adolescent women in addition to providing health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain non-communicable diseases, but it is necessary to monitor some micronutrients (iron, iodine, calcium, zinc, fatty acids n -3 and vitamin B12) and supplementation with vitamin B12, a vitamin mainly present in foods of animal origin. Conclusion: A planned, non-restrictive, supervised and supplemented vegetarian and/or vegan diet by a nutrition professional is healthy and appropriate for adolescent women as it has no effects on nutritional status, development or health.
