Abstract: The present paper is an investigation about urban mobility in the medium city as a hybrid model between urban concentration and urban sprawl. The study covers the theoretical framework of these urban phenomena, various successful strategies in mobility and the regulatory framework at European, state and Catalan level, where the figure of the “Pla de Mobilitat Urbana” (Urban Mobility Plan) appears as an instrument to rethink and reorganize the hierarchies established in urban mobility from the local administration. Focusing on sustainable mobility, the research analyzes the main morphological characteristics and the active and collective transport, leading to a multi-criteria comparative analysis of these modes as an alternative to the private vehicle in daily mobility that evaluates the accessibility of the city of Olot The contrast between the density and the concentration of attraction poles in the old town, as opposed to the peripheral garden-city urban extensions, not dense and with few facilities, will condition the modal choice and transport trends, which need to change given the current climate and resource crisis. Due to the low frequencies and the lack of coordination between lines, traveling by public transport is less comfortable than in a private vehicle. The bicycle appears to be a potential substitute for the car in daily trips for certain age groups, despite the lack of safety. Thus, it is necessary to search for new ideas to make collective mobility efficient in these areas and to invest in infrastructure and promotion of the bicycle as a viable mode of everyday transport.
