Abstract: | Due to their high demand for physical effort, long-distance races can acutely affect the central and enteric nervous system, the physiology of the intestine and the intestinal microbiota. Of the above, impairment of the gut microbiota can lead to gastrointestinal and respiratory problems that negatively affect athletic performance. One way to influence gastrointestinal problems exogenously is through the consumption of probiotics. Probiotics are live microorganisms, which when administered in adequate amounts confer health benefits on the host. The effect between gut microbiota diversity and sports performance is unclear. Understanding the role of probiotics in sports performance is of particular interest to athletes seeking to improve their performance in competition and shorten recovery time during training phases. |
