Abstract: Why learn and speak Catalan in the city of Santa Coloma de Gramenet, where less than 40% of shops have information signs in Catalan and the vast majority do not have Catalan as their first language of instruction? Does it make sense to learn Catalan in a place where it is the initial and habitual language of around 15% of fellow citizens, compared to more than 70% who speak Spanish? These are questions that anyone arriving in this city or in other cities in the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona could ask themselves. Barcelona, and to a large extent this is the basis of what this paper aims to address because, in spite of everything, there are many adults who enrol at the Centre for Linguistic Normalisation to learn Catalan, both in the initial course and, to a lesser extent, in the following ones. Specifically, in 2021 the CNL la Hiedra had 1,573 enrolments (and almost 2,000 in 2019, still without repercussions due to the pandemic). To understand this, I interviewed adult learners of beginner Catalan in Santa Coloma de Gramenet with the aim of finding out, in a the aim of finding out, in depth, what newcomers think about language, what leads them to study Catalan, to continue studying it beyond the initial levels (or to abandon the study) and how and why their learning can be transferred (or not) to a real use of the language beyond the spaces and moments of learning in the classroom. And, on the basis of these data, together with other published studies, to discern which social factors favour Catalan, and which, on the contrary, keep newcomers away from Catalan which, on the contrary, keep newcomers away from learning Catalan and its uses beyond the classroom.
