Abstract: The gut microbiota is a group of microorganisms which colonize the digestive tract. The variation of its composition and function is associated to several pathologies. Nonetheless, the intake of specific nutritional components restores the gut microbiota directly contributing to the improvement of the host’s health. Algae and microalgae are considered sustainable food sources with a significant amount of active components, which are regarded as key elements in human health promotion. The aim of the present study is to determine the activity of algae and microalgae on the functionality of gut microbiota. A thorough search of scientific information was carried out among research studies published in the multidisciplinary databases: PubMed and Web of Science, in the last 5 years. While implementing the search strategy, 773 publications were identified, and after screening, 26 articles were included in the review. Studies have shown that algae and microalgae, and their active compounds (polysaccharides, polyphenols, polyunsaturated fatty acids or carotenoids) contribute to the modulation of the diversity and abundance of the bacterial populations that constitute the intestinal flora. Moreover, an increase in the production of beneficial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids, has been observed. More human studies based on algae and microalgae that contribute to optimizing gut health are required to identify nutritional recommendations as they might prompt future development of alternative therapies for the prevention and treatment of noncommunicable diseases.
