Title: La importancia de la imagen: criterios de selección en las aplicaciones de búsqueda de pareja

Abstract: Matchmaking through dating apps has become increasingly popular in today's society. The profile picture plays a crucial role in decision making in this type of application. The aim of this study is to determine the selection criteria based on users profile pictures that influence the decision making to establish a romantic relationship (both sentimental and sexual) in dating apps, as well as to observe variations according to users' gender, age, and sexual orientation. Although there are previous studies on mate selection in different contexts, not much is known about the specific criteria that users use when choosing profile pictures. This research is motivated due to the increasing number of people using these applications, and the importance of the profile picture in the decision to initiate a conversation with another person. The objective is to find out how people select profile pictures of other users in matchmaking applications and which features are most important. To provide context we will review theories from the psychology of attraction, which indicate that mate choice can be based on several factors such as physical attractiveness, similarity, complementarity, and other personal, psychological, and social aspects. In addition, the theory of nonverbal communication, which emphasizes the importance of expression and the impression that individuals convey through verbal and nonverbal gestures, is analyzed. Through the provision of an ad hoc survey with different questions and images presented, statistical techniques will be used to examine the responses and look for significant relationships between variables, such as the relationship between the importance given to the body and the desire to prefer photographs with a higher degree of visualization or nudity. It is hoped that the results of this study will identify the most important criteria when selecting profile pictures in matchmaking applications, as well as possible variations as a function of the variables. In summary, the study will focus on analyzing profile selection preferences following a structured process from sample definition to interpretation of the results obtained.
