Abstract: Seagrasses play a crucial role in coastal ecosystems by providing habitat for numerous species, contributing to carbon sequestration, and reducing beach erosion through wave attenuation. Herbivory is essential for regulating trophic chains and energy transfer in marine ecosystems, particularly for habitat-forming species. These plants have developed resistance and tolerance strategies to protect themselves from herbivory. However, the future effects of ocean acidification may alter the ecological role of herbivory by modifying the defense strategies of marine phanerogams. Although increased CO₂ levels are suggested to have positive effects on seagrasses by enhancing photosynthesis, studies to date have not yielded definitive conclusions on the effects of ocean acidification on the defensive strategies of seagrasses against herbivory. To clarify these effects at a global level, a multi-level meta-analysis was conducted, encompassing publications from 1970 to 2022. The results indicate that ocean acidification could enhance the resistance and tolerance of seagrasses, while also showing a significant increase in herbivory. However, these effects may vary depending on the species, as observed in the case of Z. muelleri, where significant negative effects on defensive strategies were found. This meta-analysis provides a broader insight into the impacts of ocean acidification on the defensive strategies of seagrasses against herbivory.
