Abstract: Through a bibliographic analysis of the main authors who have researched in the field of the rising Catalan, this study examines whether the first archaic feudal texts from the 11th century, in which elements of the new romance language are informed, can be considered the first testimonies of the new Catalan romance. We will not try, however, to prove the oldest text of our language, neither to enter into a competition with the neighbouring languages. This study, that deals with a very lively topic among academics due to the uncertainties that generate the approach to an era with weakness of information, will display the different contributions of the most important authors in the field of the history of the language and the historical linguistics. With this aim, we analyse the birth of the Catalan romance by relating it to the birth of the other romance languages; the evolution of Vulgar Latin until the birth of the oral and, afterwards, written Catalan; and, finally, we analyse the context in which the first medieval documents appear, that is, in the new historical and social reality the feudalism represented. As an example that will help to contextualize the state of the language, we review the Feudal Oath between Ramon, son of Estefania, and Ramon IV, Count of Pallars Jussà (11th century) through a linguistic and social-historical study. A testimony that, despite included in several compilations of ancient Catalan documents and belonging to a group of legal texts with quite homogeneous formalisms, has not been in our opinion sufficiently valued from a linguistic and historical perspective.
