Author: Martínez Gómez, Daniel

Abstract: Introduction. Self-injurious behavior without suicidal intention is an increasingly frequent health problem, especially among our young people. The reasons for these behaviors are diverse but they are usually associated with poor emotional management. In addition, the problem is aggravated by the fact that patients refuse conventional treatments out of fear of being stigmatized or judged. Objectives. A bibliographic review was carried out to find out the efficacy of smartphone applications as an alternative or support treatment for self-injurious behaviors without suicidal intention in adolescents. Method. A systematic bibliographic search was carried out in Pubmed and Scopus following the methodology indicated by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA).In a first search and after eliminating duplicate articles, 121 documents were found, of which, after a selection according to inclusion and exclusion criteria, 10 articles were selected for the final review. Results. In general, the reviewed documents consider that mobile phone applications can be a valid tool to break down barriers in the treatment of self-harm. Conclusions. Smartphone applications seem to be a valid and appealing alternative to conventional treatments for self-injurious behavior in adolescents, but there is still a lack of evidence to confirm this statement, so researchers are urged to continue studying this issue.
