Abstract: | Introduction. Peer Support Workers' training in Catalonia heavily emphasizes practical role-play exercises, which simulate real-life accompaniment situations. Objectives. This study aims to explore the contents and communication styles employed during individual peer support sessions. Method: We adopted a qualitative approach, conducting thematic and content analysis of 11 role-play exercises. Results. Conversations primarily revolved around users' problems, the support relationship itself, the recovery model, as well as resources, lifestyle, and processes for recovery. The prevalent use of first-person language and self-disclosure was observed. Discussion. Peer support workers exhibit a more mutual style, focusing on the recovering citizenship model. Conclusion. Peer support workers bring a distinctive style and content to their role, complementing the contributions of other mental health professionals and the current biomedical framework. |
