Title: El Musical Flamenco: Influencia de la cultura andaluza en la trilogía flamenca de Carlos Saura
Author: Senovilla Anillo, Miguel Ángel
Tutor: Creus, Tomás
Abstract: Andalusian culture has made its mark in the world of art: from Andalusí music to the paintings of the Sevillian School, including Mudejar architecture, Lorca's theater, or Sevillian religious sculpture. However, there are no clearly Andalusian movements within Spanish cinematography. This leads to the question: does Andalusian cinema exist? And if so, what are its characteristics? Taking as a case study Carlos Saura's Flamenco trilogy - Bodas de Sangre (1981), Carmen (1983), and El Amor Brujo (1986) - this analysis aims to explore how Andalusian culture can influence cinema through one of the region's most renowned cultural elements: flamenco. Using regional cinema theory as a tool and taking advantage of the flexibility of the musical genre, each film will be analyzed to determine how Andalusian culture can influence its narrative, structure, style, and themes. Likewise, the specific elements of flamenco will be examined to understand how they modify the staging and narrative proposal of the films, and how Andalusian culture is portrayed in them. Ultimately, all this information will be used to identify the unique elements to Andalusian artistic creation in Saura's work, proposing the distinctive characteristics of the Andalusian Musical.
