Title: Qui eren els habitants de Barcino? Estructura social de la colònia en època alt-imperial
Author: Badia Llorens, Fèlix
Tutor: Morera Camprubi, Jordi
Abstract: This work constitutes a global approach to the social structure and demography of early imperial Barcino, through the information provided by the epigraphy (monumental, funerary and amphoric), the necropolis, domestic architecture and urban planning. From the study of these data it is particularly remarkable the control exercised by an elite integrated by a compact nucleus of families enriched thanks to the wine business, developed in the whole area of influence of the city; the efficiency of the system of social promotion; and the omnipresence of the freedmen in the economic life, even in positions of social pre-eminence. In addition, we analyze the different estimates that have been made in recent times about the volume of the city's population, which may be too high for a city of the architectural and urbanistic characteristics of Barcino, where large houses and administrative buildings stand out, but where, on the other hand, the homes of people of humble origin have not been found.
