Title: El eje microbiota-intestino-cerebro y las enfermedades neuropsicológicas: Una revisión sistemática

Abstract: The brain and gut are closely connected by a two-way communication system called the "microbiota-gut-brain axis." This axis communicates with the central nervous system the autonomic nervous system and the enteric nervous system in order to maintain the homeostasis of the individual. This systematic review aims to describe the current knowledge on the relationship between the intestinal microbiota and neuropsychological diseases. 488 studies were found in the databases Pubmed, PsycINFO, Scopus, Web of Science, UOC Library, in addition to a descending search. 38 records were analyzed from which 6 studies were finally selected that met the inclusion criteria: English or Spanish language, dealing with a diagnosed neuropsychological disease, neuropsychological evaluation carried out and with analysis of samples of the intestinal microbiota. Relevant information was extracted from each of the selected articles, such as the type of study and design, population and diagnosis, study objective, neuropsychological tests and/or neuroimaging tests performed, brain domains and areas evaluated, intestinal microbiota, results and conclusions as well as main limitations and risks of bias. Results were obtained that related alterations of the intestinal microbiota with neurodegenerative diseases, specifically with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. The main limitation of this review is the limited number of articles on this topic. Microbiota analysis provides the opportunity to add a new biological marker to facilitate the diagnosis, intervention and investigation of neuropsychological diseases.
