Title: Identidad de adicto y autoestigma. Una mirada fenomenológica
Author: Garau Pérez, Pedro Jacinto

Abstract: Alcoholism stands as a significant social and health issue in Spain, a country where environments and customs that promote widespread alcohol use coexist with beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors that reject and marginalize those struggling with addiction. These individuals are labeled as alcoholics and urged to embrace this identity. This research aims to enhance the understanding of addictions from a social identity perspective. Its goal is to comprehend how subjects experience the adoption of the addict/alcoholic identity, its constituting dimensions, whether it involves internalizing attributes and beliefs stemming from social stereotypes, and its positive or negative consequences on their quality of life and prognosis. A qualitative methodology, interpretive phenomenology, is adopted. An inductive, flexible, and emergent process is set up. The sample will consist of 15-30 adults (enough to reach theoretical saturation), Spaniards, selected for convenience and based on quotas, with a history of problematic consumption as determined by the AUDIT. Interviews and focus groups will be used to collect personal narratives that will be coded, analyzed, and from which the main dimensions of the experience will be extracted. The aim is to develop a nuanced and profound final narrative that captures the essence of the addict identity and its consequences, which can improve understanding and treatments, as well as make visible and reduce the associated stigma. Some limitations must be considered: the impossibility of generalizing results, the potential for biases, and results stronglydependent on context.
