Title: Mitos y realidades de la desdolarización
Author: García-Purriños García, Tomás Valentín

Abstract: Although the dollar continues to be the international dominant currency in all the essential functions of money (means of payment, reserve of value and unit of account), there are certain economic, technological, and political elements, and a decade of efforts to reduce the global hegemony of the dollar led by different countries, that could erode this privileged position. In this sense, we investigate the causes of the international position of the dollar, rooted on the end of the Bretton Woods system, how it replaced the sterling and why neither the yen nor the euro have been able to be credible alternatives. We conclude that for a currency to achieve a dominant position, the issuer must have a relevant weight in global trade, generate confidence, be able to provide a high supply of safe assets and have the will to internationalize its currency. In this context, we don´t identify any concrete alternative, but we consider the evolution into a fragmented system, with regional blocks, where three dominant currencies coexist in their respective areas of influence (dollar, euro and renmibi) with their digital alternatives, and a more relevant role of non-traditional currencies and gold as international reserve assets. All of this has financial, economic, and monetary policy implications, as well as seems to advance higher volatility of the foreign exchange market, which must be addressed to avoid the risks of a financial or international trade crisis.
