Abstract: The present Bachelor’s Final Project investigates the influence of translators on the conveyance of gender roles and stereotypes in illustrated children’s books. Previous research on how to approach gender issues in the translation of illustrated children’s books is scarce and it is necessary to consider its interest in the field. The paper’s theoretical framework clarifies the most basic Gender Studies concepts, determines the factors that professionals should consider while translating illustrated books, and establishes the ideal profile a translator should have to conduct a task from a gender perspective. In order to support the theoretical basis, a contrastive analysis is carried out via the examination of two different illustrated books, both dealing with gender issues as the plot of the story. The results of the analysis show the translator has the ability to convey, either intentionally or unintentionally, their own ideas, opinions or ideology on the matter through the decision-making process when translating the text. The paper highlights the importance of gender perspective to achieve inclusive, diverse, and less discriminatory translations.
