Abstract: Attention is a cognitive process that is essential for living consciously in the present moment, as well as for connecting with our own world and that of others. Nowadays, the amount of stimuli in the environment overloads the attentional process, transforming our perceptual experience and our ability to recognise others. The main aim of this academic essay is to argue that the activation of the attentional process is a sine qua non condition for the emergence of characteristics such as empathy and other intrinsic values that motivate helping behaviour. The analysis of the social problem of the economy of attention derived from technological media is situated in terms of a capitalist socio-political context, which is why an approach based on social constructivism has been carried out, allowing for a critical and qualitative reflection. Conclusions have supported the initial premises, understanding that, due to the limitation of the attentional process, it is essential to learn to attend and disregard with awareness, as a way of taking agency of one's own mental and bodily resources. Also, the problem of attention must be understood from a collective point of view, assuming that it is so dangerous that it can change the prototypical prosocial characteristics of human beings.
