Title: La fal·làcia del Sud Global. Disseny d’una App. per fomentar la compra de proximitat a Botswana

Abstract: Africa exemplifies the fallacy of the global south better than any other region in the Southern Hemisphere. Today, rampant capitalism inundates countries like Botswana, Zambia, and South Africa—one of the most unequal countries in the world, where 10% of the population controls 90% of the resources— with shopping centers, supermarkets with unaffordable prices, and continuous privatizations. Digital tools should help improve people’s lives, build community, explore alternative paths to stability, and, why not, create revolution. The final degree project I present today focuses on fostering community bonds, encouraging local purchasing, and facilitating courses, training, and education through associations and administration to promote healthy eating and the consumption of fruits and vegetables. We will focus on Botswana, where I have lived, for this project. Based on contextual observation, interviews, and ethnological work, we propose creating a mobile application to connect farmers with local consumers. Considering the rapid development of the internet in Botswana, we find this solution viable. The application will also facilitate home delivery of fruits and vegetables or collection at a common point, events to promote healthy consumption, and workshops to improve sustainable production.
