Abstract: In recent years the film industry has undergone major transformations marked by the rise of video-on-demand platforms and the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The current state of the industry is disconcerting. Competition in the medium is increasing due to the growing number of streaming platforms and cinemas are still reeling from the aftermath of the pandemic as they seek to adapt to a new cultural paradigm. In this context, this paper evaluates the direct impact that the pandemic has had on the industry in Spain, comparing the transformation of viewers' consumption habits and the changes in various sections of the industry such as cinemas, streaming platforms or physical format. Using a mixed methodology, the study combines the theoretical approach resulting from an exhaustive collection of empirical data with the quali-quantitative study through a representative survey of the Spanish population that seeks to obtain accurate data on consumption preferences. The results of this study offer a detailed view of how COVID-19 continues to affect many branches of the industry and how viewer consumption habits have been shaped by the pandemic and by the platforms themselves. The research provides a holistic view of the post-pandemic situation of the Spanish film sector and reveals that this event was key to understanding the current state of the industry. The pandemic has accelerated the adoption of streaming platforms and changed viewers' consumption habits. Other media such as cinemas and physical formats need to reinvent themselves and find new business models to adapt to this new paradigm. These transformations suggest a lasting change in the audiovisual industry, where streaming platforms will play a key role in the new normal of entertainment.
