Title: Retorno en “Primer exilio” de Ernestina de Champourcin
Author: Gracia Arce, Beatriz
Tutor: Hernández Hernández, Sònia
Abstract: Ernestina de Champourcin, a leading intellectual of the so-called Generation of ‘27 and linked to the Republican project, was forced to go into exile, first to France and then to Mexico, after the defeat of the Republic. In exile she mainly worked as a translator, while maintaining relations with other poets of her generation, such as Carmen Conde, through correspondence. Exile transformed her and brought her closer to spirituality and religion. Our interpretative essay on Primer exilio (1978) begins at the moment when she decided to return to Spain in 1972, having become a widow. It is then that Ernestina de Champourcin is confronted with the reality of her departure. The work offers us a cascade of experiences, sensations and people linked to the traumatic journey into exile. In our analysis of the work, we will focus on this and on the elements that run through the different parts of the collection. These are: ‘Primer exilio’, ‘Etapas del tiempo’, ‘Tipasa’, ‘Poemas con Rilke de fondo’.
