Abstract: This work explores the interaction between economic growth and environmental degradation, using analytical tools such as the Tapio decoupling index, ecological elasticity, and the Environmental Kuznets Curve. The study focuses on the hypothesis that economic growth in high-income countries has not resulted in absolute decoupling from environmental degradation. Through a detailed analysis, it examines whether some countries have achieved strong decoupling between GDP growth and CO2 emissions, and how this phenomenon is less common when considering material consumption and when introducing the perspective based on consumption versus the territorial one. In addition, it addresses the role of production delocalization in the externalization of emissions and how this is reflected in the reduction of a country’s ecological burden. This study aims to contribute to the debate on how countries can balance economic growth with environmental preservation, offering valuable insights for policymakers, researchers, and stakeholders in global sustainability.
