Abstract: Tourism is a growing area in which the emergence of new technologies and, above all, the Internet, has had a major impact on the internal procedures of the tourism industry and on the booking systems and the way of searching information by the users. On the other hand, the huge amount of information available on the Internet and the existing disorder causes the development of the concept of Semantic Web, a technology for machines to understand the Web enough to make the search and access to information easily and naturally. Firstly, this article analyzes the state of the art of Semantic Web related to the field of tourism, introducing tourism ontologies currently available, and then describing the development of a specific ontology in the domain of tour routes. With this ontology, through an example, it is tried to show the usefulness of this technology for cataloguing related information available on different websites.
