Abstract: The idea of creating new cells in the adult brain - or neurogenesis - was not accepted until the late twentieth century. Increased interest in neurogenesis and the implications of this in both health and disease, giving way to a multitude of research, which have led us to learn more about neurodegenerative diseases. One example is Huntington's disease, where hippocampal neurogenesis has been shown to be deficient. It has also been observed that the recovery of neurogenesis improves the affective and cognitive symptomatology presented by the patients of Huntington. Future research, therefore, focuses on neurogenesis as a therapeutic strategy to successfully tackle the fight against neurodegenerative diseases.
