Abstract: Changes in the job market, the incorporation of women into the productive sphere along with greater flexibility in workplaces, working hours and labour relations are transforming men's role at work and in the family. The increase in the number of double-income families and the decline in western societies of the work-focused male provider model have also led to a redefinition of men's role in the productive and reproductive spheres. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to analyse some alternative and unconventional models of parenthood and masculinity that are adopted by couples in the transition to parenthood. Our focus will be on those men who play an active role in the reproductive sphere, especially in the care of children. The methodological approach is qualitative and is based on partially structured interviews conducted between 2011 and 2013. The sample is made up of 21 men who describe themselves as engaged fathers because their work allows them more time for childcare and because the majority are or have been at some point the main carer of the children.
