Abstract: | In the mid-20th century, companies and other organizations became aware of the advantages of organizing work by means of projects. These innovative project-based procedures made way to the traditional project-management methodologies. These methods are mostly sequential and not so flexible to meet the needs and respond to the unpredictable requirements and challenges that appear in the course of a project. To solve this problem, at the beginning of 90's agile methodologies appeared. These ones are lighter and more versatile within the framework of current projects. The aim of this paper is to review the differences between traditional and agile methodologies. The main features of agile methodologies, their principles and fundamentals are described in detail; likewise, the required parameters to appreciate the relevance of each methodology are also discussed. Finally, both methodologies are compared and many recommendations are suggested as a guidance to introduce the traditional or the agile methodologies, depending on the type of project the company wants to develop. |
