Abstract: In 1998 a horror movie premiered in Japanese theaters that would break the rules of the genre and opened the eyes of thousands of people to Japanese cinema, showing them something new. This film was 'Ringu'(The Ring), a film about a cursed video tape which killed anyone that saw it seven days later. This pioneering film created a wave of Asian horror cinema which spread worldwide, acting as a springboard for directors wanting to make films and was the salvation of the horror genre which began to decline in popularity after the new Slasher films of the 1990s. This dissertation is a guide to the films which gave rise to this wave, the films this wave later inspired, the effects these films caused in neighboring countries, the consequent subgenre produced in Hollywood, the fall of this wave at the beginning of the second decade of the 2000s and its hypothetical resurrection in 2016.
