Abstract: The Independence of the Baltic Republics, Macedonia and Montenegro are examples of successful secession processes in Europe since the 90s that have concluded in a peaceful way or with brief violence episodes and have originated new democratic states. In all 5 cases there was an ethnic cleavage and there had been unionist parties willing to safeguard the statu quo of belonging to the central state. In this work, I describe how none of these unionist parties is electorally successful after the independence and finally disappear or suffer important transformations, and how the ethnic-based or ideology-based unionist parties follow a different pathway.
