Abstract: The theory of conceptual metaphor enunciated by Lakoff and Johnson presents a new dimension of the functioning of language, based on the existence of conventional metaphorical correspondences between physical experience and abstract enunciation. Thus, metaphor is part of our daily use of language, linking the concepts we use through networks of metaphors that guide our understanding. In Catalonia there have been no studies on the conceptual metaphors of our political language so far. This paper intends to make a first contribution in this field, concentrating on the concept of poverty and how the various parliamentary groups constructed it and to represented it during the General Debate on the social emergency situation, economic reactivation, public policies and the need for an institutional response, which took place in the Parliament of Catalonia on 9th and 10th March 2016.
