Abstract: The aims of this study are to highlight, through a theoretical approach to the work of some experts on the subject, the importance of art in the education and training of students in formal education. On the one hand, through arts subjects and, on the other hand, as a tool to teach and learn in any subject of the curriculum. The work reflects on the need for a change in artistic education that adapts, following a constructivist thought, to the reality of students and to a current situation where visual culture has come to be installed in the lives of young people in a imperative way. Subsequently, through a field work located in the context of Ecuador, we want to know the opinion and position of art and education professionals regarding the importance and approaches of teaching the arts, to see how they taught and use the arts in the classrooms. We want to show if, as currently stated, the teaching of the arts in formal education really contributes to the integral and critical formation of students, and to enrich their symbolic resources for good communication.
